Live in Caregiver

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business has warned that the live-in caregiver program is “failing” and needs to be fixed, but the federal administration has said there are no plans to change it.

This program is a work permit for caregivers who come from abroad and work in private homes, usually as nannies, housekeepers, or personal support workers. This is a form of public assistance for the elderly and disabled in Canada, which provides in-home care for people who are unable to live on their own.

This program was introduced by the Ontario government in 1974 as a way to provide home care services for people with disabilities, seniors, and people with chronic illnesses. It was created as a response to the shortage of nursing homes and the increasing number of seniors living at home. The program is funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care (MOHLTC) under Ontario’s Ontario Works (OW) program.

The live-in caregiver program is designed to help those who need around-the-clock care but cannot afford it or do not have family members or friends available to provide it. The caregivers are paid an hourly wage set by the MOHLTC that varies depending on the area they reside in and their qualifications.
